Originating in the Netherlands in the 17th century, gin was first sold in pharmacies as a medicine to calm stomach problems. Eventually finding its way to the poorer classes of British society, the quality and status of this spirit ultimately improved. Today, gin is an important ingredient in a variety of popular cocktails, including gin and tonic, and the gin martini. Gin is distilled with juniper berries, which gives the spirit its primary flavoring.
