Honey (Engl)

A Plea for Bees - Honey (Engl)

Bees are dying in droves. Why?

Both the U.S.A. and the U.K. report that the bee population has dropped by more than 30%. Other countries report higher figures. Reasons for this are not clear, though many ideas have been put forward - the varroa mite, pesticide use, or the changing climate.

Dennis vanEngelsdorp talks about the alarming, worldwide disappearance of worker bees (English subtitles)

Honey in Malta (Engl)

It is believed that the island of Malta got its name from the Greek word, honey.
So it's no wonder that some of the best honeys come from this island nation which has over 20 unique kinds of "nectar of the gods".

How to Harvest Honey (Engl)

Beekeeping 101 (Engl)

Honey bees form an organized society with their lot in life decided early on. Mary Reilly, chef/owner of The Savory Kitchen, and recreational beekeeper, walks us through the details of setting up your own beehive, from brood chambers to honey supers to the queen excluder, how to maintain the hive, and what to expect as a result. This is an endeavor we found absolutely fascinating! We hope to follow up with Mary in the Fall of 2010 to film her harvesting the honey.

Beehive Honey Extraction (Engl)

Mary Reilly, chef and amateur beekeeper, offers this follow-up to her fascinating Beekeeping 101 video. Here she shows the fruits of her busy hive and demonstrates honey extraction techniques. Mary and Kelsey Clark suit up in heavy-duty garb to sweep irritated bees from the hive frames. The comb on each frame is then raked to expose the honey. Then the frames are placed in an extractor that spins out the liquid gold using centrifugal force. Once filtered and jarred, honey is ready to use or give as a sweet and thoughtful gift.
